Product Details

15 ¾ x 27 inches

Almost more lush and saturated than many of his classic market paintings, "The Red Raincoat" is a slice of life from Spain, and an example of why Clark Hulings said he often preferred overcast conditions for painting rich colors. The red awning that says "Teresa Galan" pulls you in, and you see the merchant just under it, reaching across to her yellow flowers with a forest of green ferns under her work table. The people walking in the rain are as varied and colorful as the flowers themselves, with women in orange and blue coats, and couples walking with umbrellas in lilac, pink, blue, yellow, and green.

But most notable? That bright, almost white reflection of the rain on the ground. Lean in and see the detail of the sheen of the water, the reflected colors, and the outlines of the cobblestones. This is a piece that reminds us of how beautiful a grey day can be.
