Hulings comments in "A Gallery of Paintings" that his advice about painting flowers includes: "Make good use of hard, taught, geometric man-made objects such as pavements, awnings, umbrellas, poles to offer contrast and to emphasize the random delicacy of the flowers." You can see he's doing just that with the inclusion of the trellis, the structures and beams of the roof set against the radiant yellows and contrasting purple pops of the flowers.

This moment may invite you to remember Paris fondly: the Île de la Cité is in the center of the Seine river, and the flower market has existed since about 1830, close to the events featured in Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables."
