Blonde Girl in Sicily

Clark Hulings’ Paintings Featured at Annual Scottsdale Art Auction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE— March 3, 2021; Santa Fe, New Mexico: On April 9 and 10, the 2021 Scottsdale Art Auction will present 400 lots of the finest in Western, wildlife and sporting paintings and sculpture at an in-person, online and by-phone auction from a location in Old Town Scottsdale.

Clark Hulings, who began selling work at the very first Scottsdale Art Auction in 2005, will have four oil paintings in the sale. Hulings, who passed away in 2011, first met the Scottsdale Art Auction founder Jack Morris in 1980. The artist asked Morris, then a gallerist, to be his dealer “east of the Mississippi.” (Morris Fine Arts is based in Hilton Head, SC.)

“Clark has had one or more paintings in every Scottsdale Art Auction from the beginning of the auction in 2005. He had six in 2007; five in 2013; five in 2018 and eight paintings in last year’s 2020 sale,” said Scottsdale Art Auction’s founder, Jack Morris.

Along with Hulings, this year’s Scottsdale Art Auction features work by American Masters like William Gollings, Carl Rungius, W. Herbert Dunton, Edgar Payne, Albert Bierstadt alongside Contemporary American art greats.

“The exciting thing about this year’s auction is we have a large selection of Southwestern paintings from the Taos Society of Painters and two very rare George Catlin paintings from 1834 and 1835,” said Morris.

The four Clark Hulings paintings included for sale at the upcoming auction are:  El Palmar #3, oil, 20 x 30, 1967; Stone Bridge, oil, 8 X 16, 1987; Old Lady in Black— Valencia oil, 32 x 46, 1969; and Blonde Girl in Sicily oil, 24 x 36-1970.

Hulings was a master of capturing working people in scenes around the world; that he became known as a Western painter is ironic— most of his paintings were painted in Europe and Mexico. The paintings included in this years’ Scottsdale Art Auction capture the diversity and masterfulness of the artist’s work.

“Although he never thought of himself as a Western artist, Clark Hulings’ reach within the genre is profound and lasting.” —Michael Clawson

Old Lady in Black—Valencia, and Blonde Girl in Sicily will both be included in a forthcoming monograph about Hulings by esteemed arts writer James D. Balestrieri.

In 2022, the Clark Hulings estate will celebrate the centennial of the artist’s birth with yearlong programming.
