Completed in 1997, this spectacular composition is one of the few pieces that Clark added to the 20th anniversary edition of A Gallery of Paintings.
A scene from North Eastern Portugal that was "ready made" when Clark came upon it. He had been searching the area for good material, and was about to call it a day when he wandered into this composition. The resulting painting is vintage Hulings: donkey, terra cotta roof, farmer working, rustic walls, tons of texture, wildly varying values and lighting, architectural complexity, and humor.
